Supporting Battle
of the Bands |
Throughout the years, Ottawa has seen many of its young hockey players play their way through the minor hockey ranks and into the NHL. These players, upon their retirement have chosen to return to their roots and make their home in the Ottawa area. With the co-operation and support of the Ottawa Senators the Ottawa Senators Alumni was established in 1992. Presently the Alumni have 41 members who actively participate in local fundraising events throughout the Capital region. Over the years, the Alumni have been involved in many different fundraising events and in the process have raised over $400 000 for local charities. However in 1997 an unfortunate accident that occurred to a young minor hockey player named Jason McDonald changed the focus of the Alumni's fundraising efforts. Jason, a 16 yr. old midget "A" hockey player, was injured during tryouts damaging his spinal cord and living him without the use of his legs. Jason needed wheelchairs and other medical equipment, and his family had to build a new wheelchair accessible home. Along with several other groups, the Alumni rallied around Jason and his family and helped raise $100 000 for them. As we got
involved with Jason, we were struck by the fact that this could happen
to any one of us. With that in mind the Ottawa Senators Alumni created
a new foundation for sports rehabilitation called "It Could Happen
to You". This fund will allow the Alumni to help other athletes who
face the same challenges as Jason and his family. |
